Remember Your Roots | Episode 4 | Jonathan Johnson

Posted by Justin Bayer on April 27, 2017 at 9:52 AM

It was July of 2014, and I was enjoying the kickoff BBQ in the backyard of Matt Candler’s house for the ninth cohort of the Launch Program. Matt is the CEO of 4.0 Schools in New Orleans. I will never forget the powerful sense of community I felt in the air that afternoon as Matt spoke. “We are not worried about what it is you are building now,” Matt shared, “we are concerned about the 20-year version of who you are to become.” I was surrounded by an incredible group of people from all across the country, united by a shared passion to positively impact education.

Be You | Episode 3 | William P. Scott

Posted by Justin Bayer on April 20, 2017 at 9:13 AM

I must have walked by William Scott at least 20 times over the past two years heading towards my seat in section 107 at the New Orleans Pelicans games. Each time, William greeted me with a smile and positive vibe. His optimism was contagious, as if to reassure me that we’d win each game. One day, I finally took a moment to introduce myself and thank him for the energy he brings to our section.

You've Got That Soul In You | Episode 2 | Patricia Green

It was our handshake that sparked this connection. You see, Pat Green did not let go of my hands once we shook. In fact, after about a minute, I didn’t want to let go. I could have held her hands even longer. No words were necessary in this instant. All of my grandparents have passed, and for a moment, I felt reconnected with all of them. Pat’s smile drew me over to her, as she stood with her daughter Holly and son-in-law Javier on Jefferson Ave, preparing to watch her first Mardi Gras parade ever.

Say Hi To A Stranger | Episode 1 | Dorian-Gray Alexander

Posted by Justin Bayer on April 13, 2017 at 9:00 AM

I met Dorian on the St. Charles Ave. neutral ground on Fat Tuesday 2016. I recognized Dorian as a 610 Stomper, one of my favorite dance groups of Mardi Gras. I had to say hello. We shared a very brief connection and I asked to take a picture with my son, who was dressed up as Darth Vader. Dorian and I connected on Facebook, but I did not interact with him again until Mardi Gras 2017, when we crossed paths at the same exact spot as we did the previous year. I reconnected with Dorian and shared that I enjoy following his posts on Facebook and appreciate everything he does as a 610 Stomper. We shared another photo and went our separate ways.

The Magic Hour

The startup journey has taught us many lessons over the last seven years, including that nothing is more powerful than the importance of human connection. Connections, which can happen in a moment, influence critical decisions like where to attend college, what passions to pursue for a career, and what relationships to engage. Inspired by Welcome To College, this weekly web series explores the power of human connection and the sacred threads of life operating at every given moment of time. It is created to inspire campus tour guides in their roles as leaders who are making a positive impact on the lives of prospective students and families daily. We believe a single sentence spoken at the right time can change someone's life forever.
